What is an Automated Headlight Function?

BMW’s headlights can come with an option called Adaptive Headlight Function this means that the BMW headlights can turn left to right while you are driving. This is to help reduce crashes with moving the light in the direction you are moving.

Some BMW models take this a step further and use automated LED headlights, which are able to change their brightness when faced with incoming traffic. This is done by the use of a light camera, which can detect the lights of the approaching vehicle. This is great for resolving the problem that has enraged drivers for years: being practically blinded by high-beams when oncoming drivers don’t dim them.

BMWs can also forgo LED lights for adaptive xenon headlights. This allows the fog light to illuminate at slow speeds when making a turn. Xenon headlights are typically seen in older BMW models, with most modern BMW vehicles using the LED variant.

Where is the Adaptive Headlight Module?

The adaptive headlight module is found under the headlight itself in the headlight housing. It is also commonly known as the Stepper Motor Controller (SMC) or Adaptive Headlight Drive Control Unit Lighting Module (ALC). The main cause for failure is water. This can happen for many reasons, such as driving through heavy rain or flooding, or going through a car wash. When this happens, the adaptive headlight malfunction bmw error message will display on the dashboard.

Why is the Seal a common fail point?

The access door around the headlights in a BMW should have a seal in place. The design of this seal is to prevent water from entering that area. BMW owners should check that seal and make sure it is secure if they ever open that access door to clean or replace a bulb. Without the seal properly in place, it is easy for water and moisture to get into the electrical components and cause a failure. check the seal is in place whenever doing maintenance to your BMW headlights.

What is the Stepper Motor?

The stepper motor is important to your car. It is responsible for turning the beam projector any time you turn a corner. You can find this inside the headlight and the power comes from the control module right under the headlight. Over time, the motor for this can burn out. Sometimes the connection that is there between the projector will get damaged as well.
