Signs of a failing BMW electric water pump

These BMW Electric water pumps have shown to only last around 120,000kms then will fail and need to be replaced. if you are near this interval you may want to consider replacing it now.

Warning lights for overheating come on.

How to do an easy test using the Purge Procedure

WARNING: if the pump is working it will spray at a strong current and may spray into you face safety googles and a rag is recommended to have on hand.

Step 1. Get into the car and shut the door. ( if door is open it will cancel procedure so please have another person with you to help, I had to climb out the window which we don't recommend...)

Step 2. Put the Key Fob in the Ignition.

Step 3. Press start button with foot OFF the brake.

Step 4. Turn heat to highest temperature, with fan on the lowest setting.

Step 5. Press and hold the accelerator for 10 seconds,

You should hear the water pump start to circulate, if you open the radiator cap you will see coolant pulse out of the side near the cap opening.

If you do not hear anything it is likely the pump has failed or if you hear something and open the cap it is either a very weak pulse of water or nothing at all it is likely the pump has failed.
